P&L (Profit and Loss)

A P&L (Profit and Loss), also known as a profit and loss statement or a profit and loss account, is a financial statement that shows the revenues, expenses and resulting profit or loss of a company over a period of time. The P&L report is one of the key reports used to assess the financial performance and profitability of a company.

A P&L report usually contains the following items:

Revenues: The total revenue generated by the sale of products or services. This includes sales revenue, rental income, interest and other sources of income.

Expenses: Expenses incurred during the business period. This may include selling expenses, purchasing expenses, personnel expenses, marketing expenses, rental expenses, interest expenses, depreciation, taxes and other business expenses.

Gross profit: The difference between total revenues and total expenses before deduction of taxes and interest. Gross profit represents the total profitability of the business before deducting other expenses.

Operating expenses: Expenses that are directly related to the operational business of the company. This includes employee wages and benefits, procurement, marketing, rental, depreciation and other costs necessary to run the business.

Operating profit: The difference between gross profit and operating expenses. Operating profit represents the profitability of the business after deducting operating costs.

Net profit: The difference between total income and total expenses after deduction of taxes, interest and other financial expenses. Net profit is the final result of operations and represents the profit made during the period. The P&L report is an important tool for analyzing the financial performance of a company. It provides information on a company's revenues, costs and profits and enables entrepreneurs and investors to assess the profitability, efficiency and sustainability of the business. A P&L statement is usually prepared quarterly or annually, but can be prepared for other time periods as needed.
